GESHE TSULTIM GYELTSEN
GESHE TSULTIM GYELTSEN was my Vajrayana (Tibetan Buddhist) Teacher. I studied with him regularly for about 11 years and continue to do my best to follow his teachings.
Here we see him with his boss (and formerly his student in Tibet), His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. Geshe Gyeltsen was the Co-Head Lama of the Gelupa Sect of Tibetan Buddhism that His Holiness the Dalai Lama leads.
Geshela was one of the Dalai Lama's original Teachers before helping him flee Tibet in the 1950's, following the Chinese terrorist occupation and ongoing subjugation of their country.
GESHE TSULTIM GYELTSEN taught advanced classes at my Studio in Atwater Village in Los Angeles for about a year and a half after their Los Angeles monastery was rendered unusable for gatherings by the Northridge earthquake.
Under Geshela's guidance I was initiated into a variety of high level esoteric Vajrayana (Lightning Path) practices from the Gelupa lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. Some of these practices are what the Chinese would call "Qigong" ( Chi Kung or Qi Gong ), or "Energy Work".
One night I got my courage up and, when Geshe Gyeltsen asked if anyone had a question I said:
"Geshela, you teach here at my Studio, and knew going into it, that what I teach here is Martial Arts. Buddhism advocates "Ahimsa" or "Non-'Violence". And yet most, or many, of the Martial Arts were developed, and are trained and encouraged, by various Buddhist sects around the world. Could you explain to me how Tibetan Buddhism is copacetic with Martial Arts training?"
To which Geshela replied succinctly: "PROVIDING SAFETY TO OTHERS GENERATES MORE SPIRITUAL MERIT THAN ALMOST ANYTHING ELSE ONE CAN DO..."
Geshela left his body this past February, 2009, following a prolonged illness. I miss him greatly, as will the World.
Fortunately, according to the Dalai Lama's "Oracle", Geshela would be reborn shortly,... and probably (this is my interpretation) somewhere nearby... So look for him soon at a "Birthing Ward" or "Child Care Center" near you!!!
